I have been working in this industry since 2004 where I originally started as a fresh-faced Physiotherapist straight from Otago University, working with sports teams (mostly rugby) and general rehabilitation. I found myself wanting to do more to help people with prevention of injury and illness, not just rehabilitation, so I applied for a position as a Personal Trainer at Les Mills in Wellington in 2006 and have been part of the team in Wellington ever since. I absolutely love my career and have continued to grow and learn over 2 decades, as the more you know, the more you realise there is to know.
I would describe my Personal Training style as research base, with a lot of clinical reasoning and movement correction. I aim to mesh movement and fitness with nutrition and the latest research in health and wellness. I don't believe that one approach fits all people, but that you need to find out what each person is limited by, the patterns of their life, what may be holding them back from achieving their goals and then go from there. I think that your body constantly gives you feedback about how you have treated it the last 3 months, and if you pay attention to what you have been doing, you can then make adjustments to move in a different direction. I truly believe that exercise and good nutrition are the corner stones to health and wellness for most of the population. It's not always easy making changes, but its nearly always worth it.
As for my own training, my sports of choice are triathlon and endurance sports (mostly in running and cycling). I have completed Ironman 3x, numerous Ironman 70.3 races, Aqua-bikes, Olympic distance triathlons, and I have represented New Zealand as an Age Group triathlete. I have also completed a 50k running ultra, and all the running distances below from marathon to 5km. I love setting a goal and then doing the research as to how to achieve it.
