5 Benefits of Having a Workout Buddy

After trialing hundreds of fitness ideas and new trends as a health writer for magazines and newspapers over the years, I’ve discovered some secrets to keeping fit – and staying fit.

One of the biggest secrets to keeping fit is having a workout buddy - or lots of workout buddies. There's even an app in NZ (called I.AM) that helps you find a workout buddy if you need one. So, there are no excuses for exercising solo (unless you prefer to do so).

Here are five benefits of having a workout buddy:

  1. They will motivate you to keep going and to not give up. A buddy will cheer you on to find focus and to keep striving to be your best.
  2. Workouts are a whole lot more fun if there is someone to share the sweat, tears, laughter, ups and downs, and triumphs with along the way.
  3. You will hold each other accountable. When you are tempted to hit that snooze button in the morning, or skip that workout after work, then you will have second thoughts about doing a "no-show" - because if you don't turn up you let yourself down AND someone else down.
  4. You will exercise harder - because you will help to keep each other honest during the workout!
  5. You get a social pick-me-up. Connecting with others is uplifting and creates feelings of positivity. So, it makes the idea of exercising appealing if you get to see someone who makes you smile.

A survey found that over 3000 participants of group fitness classes around the world highlighted that more than 85% of class members visit their club twice a week, specifically to engage in group classes. This is called the group fit effect.
