New Year resolutions coming thick and fast

Tepora Stowers a personal trainer at Les Mills says people at the gym on New Year's Day felt the benefit of a workout.

It's that time of year again when we make all those resolutions to improve ourselves, so what are people promising to give up, or take up, in 2010?

Maybe it's losing that Christmas pudding paunch, getting a handle on the boozing or stubbing out the smokes.

It seems like just about everyone has got something to work on.

Lynne Heasman of The Quit Group has some advice for people wanting to give up smoking.

"Our message would be, do it for yourself, do it for your health, do it for your family."

That's easier said than done, so what's the best way to go about it?

"The key is support. I believe some people go cold turkey but if you ring Quitline we can offer you support, we can offer you nicotine gum, patches gums and lozenges," says Heasman

Once you've conquered that mountain, it's time for the next challenge - losing weight.

Tepora Stowers a personal trainer at Les Mills says people at the gym on New Year's Day felt the benefit of a workout.

"Especially today, (they) probably feeling a bit guilty from partying all night, but they feel a bit better when they come out," she says.

Some people say they don't make New Year resolutions because they don't keep them.

But for the rest of us, with a little bit of lateral thinking, the rocky road to self-improvement can start anytime, anywhere.
